5210 Lets Go Waldo

Let’s Go Waldo! is a community based initiative to promote healthy lifestyle choices for children, youth and families in the Waldo County communities. Our goal is to increase physical activity and healthy eating for children and youth from birth to 18.

Let’s Go! Founding Partners are Anthem Blue Cross and Shield of Maine, Hannaford Bros. Co., Maine Health, Maine Medical Center, TD Bank, Unum and United Way of Greater Portland, a unique partnership of Maine’s leading health, business and community-based organizations.

Let’s Go started in the Greater Portland area and caught the attention of Healthy Waldo County, our local Healthy Maine Partnership. Board members and staff of Healthy Waldo County Coalition agreed to bring the program to Waldo County.

East Belfast School kicked off the project with a school wide assembly which included singing the 5-2-1-0 song and planting of an apple tree donated by Healthy Waldo County. Other schools had their own kick off variation. The goal is to have all schools in Waldo County participating.

Each school received a school based tool kit and starting the 5-2-1-0 framework based on the following messages:

*NO screen time under the age of 2.  NO TV/computer in the child’s bedroom.

Waldo County General Hospital physicians caught the 5-2-1-0 fever. On February 10th, 2010 eight primary care physicians and pediatricians from Waldo County General Hospital were trained to use the toolkit developed by the Let's Go! 5-2-1-0 staff. Dr Tory Rogers, pediatrician at Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center and Medical Director of Let’s Go spent the morning explaining how to use the tools in their practices.

At this time, Let's Go! Waldo staff is supported by  Waldo County General Hospital and MaineHealth.

Let’s Go was created in direct response to a doubling in rate of obesity in Maine’s children over the past three decades.
