HUSSC

The Healthier US School Challenge (HUSSC) is a voluntary certification initiative recognizing those schools enrolled in Team Nutrition that have created healthier school environments through promotion of nutrition and physical activity.

In 2010, monetary incentive awards became available for each HUSSC award level: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Gold Award of Distinction. To date, HUSSC awards have been given to schools in 49 states and the District of Columbia. As of August 19, 2013, there are 6,545 schools certified.

RSU 20 is one of those districts to be honored!

During the 2013 school year, elementary schools in RSU 20 earned a Bronze Award in the HUSSC Challenge – an award given to only 5% of schools nationwide. The award reflected our positive efforts in nutrition and physical activity. We have established a good foundation and are now working toward to Silver Award. This does not require major changes – just working together in the right direction and remaining mindful of opportunities including healthier celebrations in school, increased physical activity throughout the year, and non-food fundraising ideas.

Vision: The goal of the Healthier US School Challenge (HUSSC) is to improve the health of the Nation’s children by promoting healthier school environments. To help meet the goal, the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) identifies schools that have made changes to improve the quality of the foods served, provide students with nutrition education, and provide students with physical education and opportunities for physical activity.
