How to Help Your Kids When a Family Member, Friend, or Pet Dies

When someone close to a child dies, as a parent, you may feel unsure of what to say and how to comfort your child.  It may be especially difficult if you are also grieving. Everyone experiences grief in their own way, and children are no different. There are steps you can take to help your child cope. We’ve put together some tips and resources on how to approach the grieving process with your child. Even if your child has not experienced a loss, you may want to look at these articles or bookmark them, in case you need them later.

 

"When Someone You Love Dies" is written specifically for kids. It explains what grieving is and offers suggestions of things kids can do to express their feelings and ways to help them find comfort with their loss. There are also links to other articles and videos on grieving, specifically created for children.


"Talking to Your Kids About Death" offers suggestions and resources to parents on how to talk with your child about death. It provides a list of outlets parents can use to help a child cope with grief.
